Camps and yards are real management units, not paddock averages. How mixed farms should name hotspots so nutrient and salt screens stay honest.

WHAT STOCK CAMPS DO TO SOIL
Animals deposit urine and dung, compact wet ground, strip cover, and import phosphorus and potassium from supplement and grain fed on paddock. Camps on rises and under trees are familiar: higher organic matter, elevated nitrogen and phosphorus near the surface, sometimes salinity where urine concentrates over years, and pH shifts depending on base cations and leaching. DPI extension on nutrient budgeting and soil fertility repeatedly warns that camp ground is not paddock ground.
The hotspot is often tens of metres across, not the whole management unit. Yield on camp edges can look sensational in a kind year or burn in a dry finish when compacted roots fail. Averaging one rich camp core into a composite pulls fertiliser recommendations toward over-application on the majority of the paddock that was never enriched.
YARDS, LANES AND HOLDING PADDOCKS
Working yards concentrate traffic, manure, and spilled feed. Holding paddocks before shearing or sale receive heavy stocking for short periods. Nutrient maps from consultants sometimes show dramatic P and K spikes near yards; electrical conductivity can rise where salt from feed and urine accumulates. These areas are management features, not surprises — unless you forget them when sampling "representatively".
Lanes between paddocks compact and may collect runoff nutrients from upslope. A single screening point on a lane measures the lane. Name it "lane to yards" not "Paddock 7 representative".
WHY AVERAGING FAILS ADVISERS AND BUDGETS
Composite soil tests were built to characterise a uniform field for a uniform rate. Australian paddocks with stock history are rarely uniform. When the laboratory returns a phosphorus index from a bag mixed with camp soil, the recommendation applies to nowhere in particular: too much for the middle, too little for the camp if you invert the error mentally.
Portable screening makes the same mistake if you always probe the soft camp grass because it is easy to push the instrument in. Discipline means representative points on non-camp cropping ground, plus separate named points on camps you track intentionally.
Named points turn "the sheep camp" into "East camp 01 — under red gum, 20 m from trough" so five years of records still mean the same patch of earth.
NUTRIENT HOTSPOTS: WHAT SCREENING CAN SHOW

SALT HOTSPOTS: URINE, FEED AND DROUGHT
Salinity on camps is an Australian mixed-farming headache. Dry phases concentrate salts at the surface when urine deposits evaporation wins. Heavy rain after drought can mobilise salts. Conductivity screens at named camp points, with moisture noted, show whether a camp is creeping toward crop tolerance trouble on the edge where you might sow next year.
Soilquality.org.au and state salinity guides emphasise laboratory salinity measures and crop tolerance tables — not field EC alone. Screening tells you the camp edge deserves that test before you plant canola into it.
DO NOT AVERAGE INTO PADDOCK — PRACTICAL RULES
Keep at least three to six representative points per cropped paddock on non-camp ground: mid-slope, rise, known wet corner, previous problem zone.
Add camp or yard points as separate names when you deliberately monitor enrichment or salt.
Never composite camp soil into a paddock bag for laboratory work unless the agronomist explicitly wants a "worst case" test — and label it that way.
When converting paddock to crop-only, resample representative grid — camp legacy persists in soil even after rest.

STOCK MANAGEMENT IMPLICATIONS
Hotspots are not only soil trivia. They drive where you place sheep when paddocks are wet — avoiding further compaction on camp cores. They inform whether a camp should become a sacrifice area, be fenced off for revegetation, or receive gypsum or lime on advice after laboratory work. They explain why one corner always out-yields: sometimes you are measuring fertility you already paid for in supplement.
Rotational grazing that never lets camps rest continues enrichment. Long rest lets camps recover visually while chemical legacy remains — screening shows whether conductivity or nutrient screens relax or persist.
Overstocking visible camps without recording them guarantees the next owner inherits mystery yield stripes.
MAPPING CAMPS WITHOUT OVERENGINEERING
You do not need a drone every season. A hand sketch on the paddock map — camp under tree, trough camp, last night's camp on the gate corner — linked to named probe points is enough. GPS pins in the TerraTactics app anchor those names for return visits.
If yield maps show persistent high strips near water or shade, align a named screening point there before you assume variety or fertiliser caused the stripe.
CROPPING INTO OLD CAMPS
Paddock renovation often crops ground that was camp for decades. First crop years may show luxurious early growth from N and P then crash on compaction or salt. Screening before sowing on camp-named versus off-camp points clarifies whether you are dealing with fertility, salinity or structure — each different adviser conversations.
Legumes on old camps may nodulate well yet salt or compaction still limits finish. Do not read luxury biomass as proof the whole paddock needs no fertiliser.
WALKING THE PADDOCK WITH AN AGRONOMIST
Before accepting a probe reading as representative, ask where sheep camped last winter. Keep the distinction simple: "This is mid-slope; East camp is a separate point."
Comparing a camp edge with a mid-paddock point shows spatial variation without claiming the probe sets stocking rates.
GYPSUM, LIME AND MANURE: DO NOT GUESS FROM CAMPS
Camp pH and salinity screens prompt laboratory and amendment talks; they do not set gypsum tonnes. Manure spread from yards onto cropping ground is a nutrient input with its own hotspot geometry — treat spread rows as named if banded heavily.

WHEN CAMPS BELONG IN THE REPRESENTATIVE STORY
Rarely. One exception: if the paddock is so small that camp occupies most of the area, the "representative" unit is the camp paddock itself — rename mentally and manage accordingly. Another: sacrifice paddocks managed entirely as camps should be scored as their own land use, not merged into neighbour units.
RELATION TO OTHER FIELD NOTES
Subsoil constraints may hide under enriched topsoil on camps — shallow screens look fertile while compaction limits depth. CATTLE, FEEDERS AND SUPPLEMENT SPILLS
Cattle camps scale the hotspot story: larger urine patches, heavier compaction, and supplement trails from lick feeders or rolled-out hay. Feedlots on farm — even small holding pens — accumulate phosphorus and organic matter that can astonish on a first laboratory test. Treat feeder pads and spill zones as permanent named points unless you excavate and reset soil. Screening shows whether conductivity or nutrient-related indicators stay elevated season after season; that persistence justifies whether you crop those footprints or fence them for sacrifice.
DROUGHT, DESTOCKING AND CONCENTRATED PRESSURE
When drought forces long stays on sacrifice paddocks, camps overlap until the whole paddock resembles one mega-hotspot. Your representative points may need temporary relocation to the least affected strip, with notes explaining drought layout — not pretending the paddock is normal. When rest returns, rebuild the point set rather than comparing drought-era camps to pre-drought baselines without comment.
FERTILISER HISTORY ONCE CAMPS TURN TO CROP
Advisers sometimes recommend lower starter fertiliser on richly enriched camp strips and full rates on mid-paddock — that decision is laboratory and rule based, not probe prescription. Portable records help show which rows in a variable-rate plan might deserve less P without guessing from colour in the crop alone. If you uniform-rate because logistics demand it, know you may be feeding ground that already had decades of sheep gifts.
FENCING, REVEGETATION AND LONG-TERM REPAIR
Hotspots that will never be cropped fairly can be fenced for perennial pasture, saltbush on saline camps, or revegetation per DPI landcare guidance. Screening documents recovery — or lack of it — when camps rest. Trust builds with councils and catchment groups when you can show conductivity trend at a camp edge, not only a before photo.
SAMPLING PITFALLS
Never sample only lush camp grass because the probe inserts easily. Sample representative mid-paddock ground honestly, then keep the camp contrast as a separate named point. One camp reading must never be presented as a paddock summary.
WATER POINTS AND SALT FROM STOCK WATER
Trough overflow, leaking tanks and dam seepage create secondary hotspots unrelated to camping behaviour. If conductivity rises near water infrastructure, note whether stock water is saline or whether spill keeps ground wet longer than upslope. Laboratory advice on stock water quality is separate from paddock soil tests but the stories connect when sheep drink and deposit in the same loop.
BUDGETING LABORATORY SPEND ON HOTSPOTS
When camp edges threaten the next crop row, targeted laboratory on the camp point plus one off-camp point costs less than resampling the whole paddock grid blindly. Present both bags clearly labelled to the laboratory. PHOSPHORUS DRAWDOWN ON CROPPED CAMPS
Luxury early growth from camp phosphorus can mask drawdown later in the crop if roots fail on compaction. Do not skip tissue or in-season checks solely because camp ground looked "hot" on a nutrient screen at sowing. The agronomist still needs crop response language, not only soil enrichment history.
